At 5”2 and 231 pounds, diabetes and cholesterol medications were routine for Anne Marie Carver.
Weight had been something that Carver, 47, of Powder Springs, had struggled with for more than 20 years – and it wasn’t getting any better.
It was so bad that for years, Carver avoided family and friends near her hometown of Danville, Virginia, because she was embarrassed by her weight.
“I always made excuses not to see them because I didn’t want them to see how I looked,” said Carver, a judicial assistant.
But after losing 60 pounds with a gastric bypass at Piedmont Hospital last April, Carver is looking forward to returning to her hometown – and showing off her thinner frame.
“I’ve got something forward to look to, and I want to see everybody,” she said.
Carver can’t believe how good she feels after losing weights. Gone are the diabetes and cholesterol medication she used to take.
“It’s given me so much more confidence,” said Carver about her surgery and weight loss. “Surgery was the tool that got me going. Now, I want to do the things I didn’t feel like I could do or I didn’t want to do before, like horseback riding.”
Carver’s diet has radically changed. Fruit has taken the place of the cheesecake she once craved. And instead of eating an entire plate of food, she now only takes four bites.
“ I’ve basically learned to eat a new way,” said Carver, who still has 40 more pounds to lose.
Carver is forever grateful to Dr. Suraj Menachery, who heads the bariatric surgery program at Piedmont.
“Dr. Menachery is the greatest doctor on the planet,” she said. “He’s changed my life. At first, I wasn’t willing to tell people about my secret. Now that I’ve had success, whenever anybody asks how I lost weight, I tell them.”
