Radiosurgery is...

  •  Safe – Patients need not undergo surgery, so the risks of surgical complications such as infection and hemorrhage are eliminated. The risk of neurologic injury is usually less than conventional surgery. No anesthesia is required, only a local anesthesia and mild sedative.
  •  Virtually painless – The non-invasive nature of the procedure greatly reduces physical and psychological trauma. There is no scarring or disfigurement.
  • Precise – The dose of radiation each patient receives is individually planned to pinpoint a target, minimizing effects on the surrounding brain and other critical structures. It is also able to reproduce treatment with complete accuracy.
  • An option when conventional surgery is not possible; when the risks are too great; when other illnesses are present; or when the patient’s age is too advanced for conventional surgery to process safely.

Piedmont’s cancer program has earned continuous approval, most recently with commendation, for more than 25 years from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, reflecting the high standards set by the approval committee.
